U.N. extends anti-piracy policing
The United Nations Security Council has renewed authorization for nations fighting piracy off the coast of Somalia to carry on with anti-piracy measures.
The resolution was unanimously approved Monday as piracy has begun ramping again in the Gulf of Aden. It gives nations involved in policing the waters off Somalia authorization to deploy warships through Nov. 30, 2010, also allowing “nations to take all necessary and appropriate measures inside Somalia to stop acts of piracy,” according to a report Monday from Agence France-Presse.
On Tuesday, ship owners association BIMCO said any measures taken to combat piracy have to include the aggressive prosecution of captured pirates.
“BIMCO has been exploring a range of options beyond those currently in hand, but has decided that any future strategic options must involve governments and their navies and that all future options must be established through those navies,” the association said. “BIMCO will continue therefore to explore all options and is interested in speaking to all and any stakeholder involved in addressing potential solutions. BIMCO cannot however progress concrete options until nation states involved identify and implement the necessary legal framework to arrest and prosecute pirates successfully.”
