U.S. arrests man for exporting jet parts

U.S. arrests man for exporting jet parts    The United States has arrested a New York man for Long Island man for illegally exporting aviation parts for F-5 and F-14 military fighter jets.
Jilani Humayun was charged relating to the export of defense articles listed on the U.S. “Munitions List” to a company located in Malaysia, announced Michael Garcia, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, along with officials from the U.S. Homeland Security, Commerce and Defense departments.
“Details of the crime with which Jilani Humayun is charged are particularly disturbing, as he is alleged to have knowingly shipped technology as dangerous as F-5 and F-14 parts to Malaysia without any regard for the ultimate destination. As is well-documented in public reports, the sole customer of F-14 parts is the Iranian Air Force,” Garcia said Thursday.
The complaint charges him with 11 violations of the Arms Export Control Act, one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
According to the government’s complaint, while employed with an unrelated aviation parts employer, Humayun applied to the U.S. State Department Directorate of Defense Trade Controls for an export license to send certain military equipment to the Malaysian firm that would forward them to Saudi Arabia Ministry of Defense and Aviation.
But the State Department turned down that request because it said the Malaysian company was “an unreliable recipient of items on the Munitions List.”
Humayun formed his own company, Vash International Inc., to engage in the business of export management for defense and logistic support, including tanks, guided missiles and rocket launchers.
The government said that on 11 separate occasions from January 2004 to May 2006, Vash exported to the Malaysian company F-5 and F-14 fighter jet parts, as well as certain Chinook Helicopter parts, listed on the Munitions List.
Neither Humayun nor Vash International applied for nor received the export license required to send the parts included in the 11 shipments outside the United States.
Humayun, 59, is a resident of Lynbrook, New York.
