“The Bureau of Industry and Security serves the public in many ways where industry and national security intersect, including not just export licensing and enforcement, but also defense trade advocacy and critical infrastructure protection,” said Kenneth I. Juster, Commerce undersecretary who heads the agency.
The Bureau of Industry and Security is primarily responsible for export controls on dual-use items. However, the agency also coordinates all Commerce Department homeland security activities, leads outreach to industry on critical infrastructure protection and cyber security, and helps companies comply with the Chemical Weapons Convention and other international arms agreements. The agency also leads the Commerce Department’s efforts in defense trade advocacy and monitors the health of the U.S. defense industry.
The Bureau of Industry and Security is based in Washington and includes 10 field offices nationwide.
