U.S. COMMERCE SECRETARY PROMISES FULLY AUTOMATED DEPARTMENT BY 2002

U.S. Secretary of Commerce William M. Daley promised that the Commerce
Department would be fully automated by 2002.
"The Department of Commerce is using the web to entirely change the way
we deliver information," Daley said at the E-GOV 99 Conference in
Washington last Thursday. "What eBay has done for auctions, we are trying
to do for government."
In addition, Commerce’s Export Administration has announced the full
roll-out of its new Internet export license application system, the
Simplified Network Application Process, or SNAP.
The Export Administration began testing the system in February. There
are now over 300 users with access to SNAP free of charge. The SNAP system is expected to
save as many as ten days on processing of license
applications.
