U.S. Commerce Secretary visits Panama Canal

U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Guti'rrez visited the Panama Canal Thursday as part of an official tour of Panama and discussions about U.S.-Panama trade.

Guti'rrez toured the canal with Panama Canal Authority Administrator-Chief Executive Officer Alberto Alem'n Zubieta, visiting the Miraflores Locks. Officials there explained how the waterway works and updated the secretary on the progress of the canal expansion.

The expansion project will allow larger vessels to move from the Pacific to the Atlantic, substantially impacting shipping markets on the Caribbean/Atlantic side of the canal.
