The total number of shipments in February fell 2.7 percent from the same month in 2011. Imports by volume declined 17.5 percent from January 2012.
“For the past five years, the month of February tends to have the least amount of shipments and usually falls from January imports,” Zepol said. “This is partly due to its fewer number of days.”
The majority of U.S. ports saw imports plummet in February compared to January. Only two of the top 10 ports rose in February – Norfolk, Va., and Charleston, S.C., which increased 4 percent and 3 percent respectively.
