U.S., India strengthen trade partnership

The United States and India have agreed to expand trade and cooperation in civilian space and nuclear programs.

Phase one of the so-called Next Steps in Strategic Partnership (NSSP) initiative includes the implementation of measures to address proliferation concerns and to ensure compliance with U.S. export controls.

“These efforts have enabled the United States to make modifications to U.S. export licensing policies that will foster cooperation in commercial space programs and permit certain exports to power plants at safeguarded nuclear facilities,” the State Department said in a Sept. 17 statement.

Modifications include the removal of the Indian Space Research Organization headquarters from the Commerce Department’s Entity List.

The United States and India started the NSSP in January.
