U.S. pork exporters targeting Guatemala The U.S. Meat Export Federation said it has launched a program to encourage U.S. pork exports by conducting a promotional campaign in 30 retail stores in Guatemala City recently purchased by Wal-Mart.
   The campaign in the Paiz store chain is the second phase of a program to encourage pork consumption in the region. The first phase focused on dispelling the negative perceptions of pork in Guatemala and stressing that U.S. pork is safe for consumers.
   'This promotion targets medium-high to high-income consumers due to the price of U.S. pork being higher than domestic products,' said Ricardo Vernazza-Paganini, the USMEF's director of Central and South America. 'Consumers shopping at participating Paiz stores will be able to taste prepared U.S. pork products to help them make a purchasing decision.'
   He added the association is working with the same importers during the promotion 'to create a sense of ownership in this endeavor' and 'provide consistent products consumers can rely on.'
