United Kingdom increases, then defers duties on fuel

Gordon Brown, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, said the government of the United Kingdom will increase duties on petrol and other fuels by 1.22 pence per liter, but that the increase will be deferred until Sept. 1. Meantime, fuel duties will remain frozen.

The government said its policy was that 'fuel duty should rise at least in line with inflation.'
