UP improving Blairstown/Nevada track in Iowa

Union Pacific Railroad said it will spend $6.1 million this year improving track between Blairstown and Nevada, Iowa.

Earlier this month crews started removing and installing 31,200 ties; spreading nearly 9,300 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed; and replacing the surfaces at 27 road crossings and 53,400 feet of rail in curves on the line. The work is expected to be finished by the end of June.

These improvements are part of the $1.5 billion Union Pacific is planning to spend in 2006 to maintain its track across its more than 32,400-mile system.
