UP orders 10 low-emission diesel-hybrid locomotives

Union Pacific Railroad said Monday it has ordered 10 low-emission diesel-hybrid “Green Goat Series” locomotives, at a cost of $8.2 million, for use in its Southern California rail yard operations.

The hybrid locomotives are powered by large banks of storage batteries. When the locomotive is not running, a small low-emissions diesel engine on board recharges the batteries.

Union Pacific said it expects the hybrid to cut air emissions 80 to 90 percent and reduce diesel fuel use 40 to 60 percent compared to a conventional diesel-powered switching locomotive.

“These hybrid locomotives are part of the company’s commitment to air quality in California,” said Bob Grimaila, vice president-environment and safety.
