UP tests emissions-control technology

   Union Pacific Railroad has unveiled an advanced experimental locomotive to test three emissions-reducing technologies that will eventually be deployed in California.
   At the company’s J.R. Davis Yard in Roseville, located northeast of Sacramento, Calif., the UP 9900 will test exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), and diesel particulate filters (DPF). The railroad said the UP 9900 is the signature unit in a group of 25 locomotives that it will analyze during testing of emissions-reducing technologies.
   UP said it worked closely with Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) to reduce the size of the standard freight locomotive engine so the UP 9900 would have the space to install the EGR, DOC, and DPF technologies.
   UP and EMD expect to meet higher Environmental Protection Agency standards through a 45 percent reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions. The railroad and the California Air Resources Board will jointly analyze the  emission reductions results over the next 18 months.
