UPS tests electrically-supported cargo bike

The parcel giant announced they are testing the use of the bike over a four week period for delivery and pickup of packages in Basel, Switzerland.    UPS is testing an electrically supported cargo bike in downtown Basel, Switzerland for the delivery and pickup of packages.
   UPS already uses battery-aided cargo tricycles in Hamburg, Germany. The 1-meter wide tricycles, which are ideal for inner city use, can carry loads weighing up to 150 kilograms. The tricycles weigh 115 kilograms, including the 250-watt battery.
   The company is conducting this four week long project as part of its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
   “By using cargo bikes in a targeted manner, UPS aims to reduce inner-city congestion, noise and emissions,” UPS Switzerland’s Marketing Manager Philip Healey said in a statement. “This form of urban delivery also offers a distinct advantage to UPS itself, as it reduces the time spent on searching for a suitable parking position, saving valuable time.”
