The parcel giant and logistics provider plans to purchase 26,000 solar panels for installation at eight of its facilities in the United States by the end of 2017. As a result, the company expects to see a five-fold increase in the total solar power generated across its U.S. facilities.
The expanded solar portfolio will reduce UPS’s carbon emissions by approximately 8,200 metric tonnes per year, according to company estimates
UPS operates more than 2,580 facilities worldwide, and said it expects additional solar deployments to occur over the next several years as it identifies suitable opportunities.
“Solar technology is a proven way to effectively and efficiently provide long-term power to our facilities,” said Bill Moir, director of Facilities Procurement at UPS. “We have a significant number of facilities that are well positioned to deploy solar at scale and increase our sustainable energy options for our buildings and electric vehicles.”
