UPS URGES EXPEDITED DOT APPROVAL OF U.S./CHINA RIGHTS

United Parcel Service Thursday urged the U.S. Department of Transportation to expedite the approval of its tentative rights for direct air service between the United States and China.

UPS is seeking an April 1 start-up for its U.S./China service. To accomplish that, the integrated carrier must notify the Chinese government of the final order by Jan. 17 in order to process all necessary documents.

“The ability to begin service on April 1, 2001 is essential to the realization of the economic benefits that UPS forecasted in its exhibits and testimony,” UPS said in comments filed with the DOT. “If the United States promptly notifies the Chinese government of UPS's designation, UPS intends and believes that it can commence service on April 1.”
