US Air approves OnAsset tracker

   US Airways has approved the use of OnAsset Intelligence’s GPS tracking device on its flights, allowing shippers to use the company’s SENTRY FlightSafe program to track cargo location and manage environmental conditions.
   The OnAsset device is packed in with the cargo, transmitting data to the shipper about the journey until the plane takes off and radio operations cease. The device collects temperature and other associated readings during the flight. Once the plane has landed, the radio function switches back on, transmitting location and flight data to the shipper.
   The SENTRY FlightSafe is approved by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. The device targets shipments in the health and life sciences, pharmaceutical, high-value and perishable arenas. 
   In July 2011, Southwest became an early adopter of the service, allowing shippers to use the device. One year later, the carrier developed its own tracking solution with the help of OnAsset. Delta Air Lines received FAA approval to operate the device on all its flights in January 2012.
   According to the OnAsset Website, more than 20 airlines currently allow use of the SENTRY product. – Jon Ross
