USDA drops trade help to certain state shrimpers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service rejected fiscal 2006 petitions for trade adjustment assistance that were filed by shrimp producers in Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas.

The agency found that U.S. imports of shrimp fell 0.9 percent to 7.9 million pounds between 2003 and 2004. An increase in imports is required for recertifying a petition for trade adjustment assistance.
