USDA to start issuing permits for Australian cherry imports The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said it would begin issuing permits for the import of Australian cherries into the United States and Hawaii.
   To comply with USDA regulations, the fruit must either be treated with methyl bromide fumigation followed by cold treatment, or by using irradiation. Each shipment must also be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate issued by the Australian National Plant Protection Organization certifying that the fruit either came from a USDA-approved fruit fly-free area or received the required treatment. The fruit is subject to USDA inspection when it arrives at the U.S. port of entry.
