USTR: Democratic-controlled Congress should not stop trade deals U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab used her speech before the country's largest business lobby yesterday to try to dispel concerns that a Democratic-controlled Congress will stymie the Bush administration’s efforts to secure more free trade deals.
   'People ask me if the administration's trade agenda will have to change now that Democrats are in a majority,' Schwab told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce members, in her prepared remarks. 'The answer is no. The mission is opening markets, spurring development and keeping the United States at the fore of a rules-based trading system transcends party ID.'
   She reminded chamber members that Republicans and Democrats have had a successful history of working together to promote trade no matter which political party controls the Congress or White House.
   However, Schwab warned that the world is closely observing how the new congressional leadership will respond to free trade initiatives.
   'In the coming months, farmers and ranchers, businesses large and small, consumers and governments around the world will be watching closely whether we rise to the challenge or shirk our responsibilities,' she said.
   'We must stay engaged,' Schwab added. She said that dozens of trade deals taking shape in the Pacific Rim, some with and without U.S. involvement, are a 'potent reminder that (the) U.S. must not be on the sidelines as the world integrates and strengthens trade ties.'
   So far, the Bush administration's 2007-2008 radar is focused on concluding trade deals with Vietnam, Peru, Colombia, Panama, South Korea and Malaysia.
   'We have an opportunity to make bipartisan history in trade over the next two years,' said Schwab referring to progress in both free trade agreements and the World Trade Organization’s Doha Round.
   'As positions are formed, the administration will continue to reach out,' Schwab said. 'We will continue to listen, debate and exchange ideas to craft sound policies that reflect our values and advance our economic and security interests.'
