Vancouver Port rail project moves forward

   Crews have broken ground on the second phase of the three-phase West Vancouver Freight Access Trench, which will bring added capacity to Washington state’s Port of Vancouver by adding a new rail entrance on the southeast side.
   When complete in 2014, the access trench will allow trains to enter the port without using the existing BNSF track, which is in use by passenger and freight trains on a nearly constant basis each day, according to officials.
   “Currently, each time a train enters the port, this line must remain clear while the train is ‘broken’ into pieces that can be processed and staged throughout the terminal,” port officials wrote in a press release.
   The development will include one new rail line, but will allow for additional rail expansion in the future. – Jon Ross
