Vessel emission rules meeting set for Tacoma

A meeting to discuss compliance with new international treaty requirements for large ship operators to significantly reduce emissions from their vessels is scheduled for June 28 in Tacoma, Wash.
The event, being held by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia, and Sustainable Shipping, will focus on the new rule adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) set to take effect from Aug. 1.
The rule requires large ships to reduce emissions when operating within a zone extending 200 miles from the coasts of both the United States and Canada.
The purpose of the conference is to share all available information on what is required, the variety of strategies for reducing emissions – from using different fuel blends to installing emission control devices – and how the rule will be enforced by both the U.S. and Canadian governments.
The meeting will be held at the Hotel Murano, 1320 Broadway Plaza, Tacoma.
