Virgin Atlantic last month ordered 12 Airbus A350-1000 passenger planes, which will also provide more cargo capacity, the airline said.
The aircraft will replace the company’s eight 747-400s and eight Airbus A340-600s and have 10 percent to 22 percent more lower deck space, depending on the seat configuration.
The order is part of a fleet modernization program that will result in half the fleet being replaced over a six-year period.
Virgin Atlantic said it will start to take delivery of the A350s in 2019, which initially will be flown on U.S. routes from London’s Heathrow Airport.
Virgin Atlantic also operates 13 787-9s and 10 A330-300s.
