Weston wins phase one contract for Long Beach port soil cleanup

Pennsylvania-based environmental remediation and construction management firm Weston Solutions Inc. has been awarded a $12.4 million contract to begin cleanup of a Port of Long Beach-owned oil field waste site.

Weston will be in charge of construction management, construction contract administration, field inspections, surveying, site testing and coordinating subcontractors.

The firm's contract calls for the excavation and disposal of about 250,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil from the site, and replacement and site grading of about 650,000 cubic yards of clean soil. The oil field waste dumping occurred at the Pier A West site before the port purchased the property.

The entire $80 million clean-up project is being overseen by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board and California Department of Toxic Substances Control.

The port plans to develop the site, once mitigated, into marine terminal facilities.
