The workers threatened to extend the protests — including hunger strikes — into this week at the authority's headquarters in the city of Ismailiya. But officials said the protests are not hindering canal operations, which continued as normal over the weekend.
The protests are part of widespread labor unrest all over Egypt in the wake of an uprising against the country's longtime president Hosni Mubarak, which led to his and his government's ouster last month.
