World Airways contract gives Etihad extra cargo capacity
Peachtree City, Ga.-based World Airways has signed a one-year contract with Etihad Crystal Cargo, part of United Arab Emirates-based Etihad Airways, to provide MD-11 freighter services to and from Frankfurt (Hahn Airport), Germany; Shanghai, China; and Mumbai, India.
Etihad Crystal Cargo was launched in 2004 and introduced all-cargo services in February 2005, currently operating a fleet of regional freighter aircraft and two Airbus A300-600RFs. The Middle East airline carried more than 130,000 tons of cargo in 2006.
In August, Global Aero Logistics Inc., parent company of ATA Airlines, completed the acquisition of World Air Holdings Inc., owners of World Airways and North American Airlines, in a deal worth about $315 million. Global’s majority owner is MatlinPatterson Global Opportunities Partners II.
