Yang Ming busy in Port of Kaohsiung

Taipei-based ocean carrier Yang Ming today held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new container terminal in the Port of Kaohsiung's that will boost the Taiwanese port's annual container handling capacity by at least 2 million TEUs.

The Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau in late September awarded Yang Ming a 50-year concession for the Port of Kaohsiung Intercontinental Container Terminal project, the harbor's largest terminal expansion in years that requires investment of over 15 billion Taiwan new dollars ($463 million).

After completion of work by 2015, Yang Ming will maintain four deepwater berths at the 74.8 hectares terminal that will have a 1,500 meter waterline. The berths will be able to handle ships of more than 100,000 tons.

Also today, Yang Ming started construction of its Multi-temperature Warehousing Logistics Center in Kaohsiung that will include three temperature levels: refrigeration, cold storage, and constant temperature/humidity.

'Yang Ming is determined to keep its root in Taiwan as evidenced by the construction of permanent facilities,' the carrier said in a statement.
