Yantian opens new berth

Yantian opens new berth Yantian International Container Terminal said Friday that the fourth berth of its expansion project is ready to open, bringing the terminal's total number of berths to 13.
   The phased expansion project will see two more berths added by 2010 to cope with growing import and export volume coming through South China. Yantian is the biggest of the terminals that collectively make up the Port of Shenzhen, and had been adding six berths in its expansion project over the last couple years. The third berth of the six-berth expansion was opened in March.
   On Thursday, the latest berth was given the thumbs up by government inspectors. It is nearly 400 meters long with a water depth of 16 meters, meaning it can handle 10,000-TEU containerships.
