Zim leaving Portland

Zim leaving Portland Israeli-based ocean carrier Zim American is leaving the Port of Portland after just one year at the West Coast port, news outlets in Oregon reported.
   Zim ships will stop calling at the port on Sept. 2, Port of Portland Executive Director Bill Wyatt is expected to announce today.
   Zim's decision to begin calling at Portland in mid-2006 had been key to a resurgence in box volumes at the port in the last year after Hyundai and 'K' Line had both pulled out in 2004. Other lines serving Portland, which has struggled to find its niche among the massive West Coast gateways of Oakland, Seattle, Tacoma and Los Angeles-Long Beach, are Hanjin and Yang Ming.
   “Our expectation is we can and will recover the lost business,” port spokeswoman Martha Richmond told the Portland Business Journal. “Our market is growing.”
