Longtime Swift Transportation chief to retire

Jerry Moyes, founder and chief executive officer of Swift Transportation Co., said he will retire from the 50-year-old nationwide trucking firm at the end of the year.    Jerry Moyes, founder and chief executive officer of Swift Transportation Co., said he will retire from the 50-year-old nationwide trucking firm at the end of the year.
   Moyes will be succeeded by Richard Stocking, who has served as president and chief operating officer of Swift since July 2010. Stocking has worked at Swift for 25 years.
   Moyes relocated to Phoenix in 1966 and began hauling steel with a single truck, forming a partnership with steel importer Common Market Dist. Corp., which he later merged with the company he founded, Swift Transportation. In 1986, he was named chairman, CEO and president of Swift. Today, the trucking outfit operates a fleet of nearly 20,000 trucks.
   Richard H. Dozer, Swift’s chairman, said the company “thoughtfully prepared for this leadership succession,” and that Moyes will continue to serve as a member of Swift’s board after his retirement.
