Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling about 183,000 Freightliner Cascadia tractors from 2017-2021 in the United States and Canada. Corrosion of an antilock brake component can cause the truck to pull to one side.
That could result in a sudden change in vehicle direction due to uneven braking on the front axle, increasing the possibility of a crash.
Chemical corrosion can slow the release timing of the single brake modulator valve. That can cause the brakes to pull to the affected side during automatic braking, according to the recall posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. The recall number is 20V-390.
DTNA reports no crashes or injuries. It estimated 1% of the 164,317 recalled trucks in the U.S. and 18,664 in Canada would experience the issue.
DTNA learned of the issue in May 2019. It worked with supplier Wabco USA to find the cause. The two settled on blockage of the inlet solenoid from magnesium chloride corrosion that deformed the O-ring. Analysis of 34 valves found the failed valves on the right side.
DTNA is still working out the repair. Dealers and customers will be notified of the recall on August 30. The trucks were produced from March 8, 2016 to June 25, 2020. Repairs will be performed at DTNA authorized service facilities.
