Argentine labor strike cripples transport

A 24-hour general strike across Argentina has shut down operations at ports and airports, and for rail and trucking operations countrywide.
It’s anticipated that all ships will remain at anchorage or berth, depending on conditions. Immigration, customs, health and agriculture staff will all be involved in the strike, as well as port administration employees, Inchcape Shipping Services said in a notice.
ISS Argentina has confirmed that as with previous strikes, main roads and highways will be blocked in Buenos Aires including key access routes to the city.
“We have reported on a number of local and regional strikes during 2012 but this is the first strike affecting the whole country and its transport infrastructure,” said Francisco Villagran, ISS regional operations manager for the Americas.
