Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan, while currently serving as acting Homeland Security secretary, has designated John P. Sanders, CBP’s chief operating officer, to oversee the duties of commissioner.
McAleenan said CBP will be in good hands under Sanders’ management, adding “he has provided strategic direction and oversight to critical enterprise services and operations support functions across the agency.”
As COO, Sanders (pictured above) has participated on several boards and committees dealing with matters involving CBP. He also has served as a principal representative and consultant for CBP at interagency and international meetings and leads efforts to partner with industry and other stakeholders to help drive innovation across the agency.
Before joining CBP, he served as the Transportation Security Administration’s chief technology officer and oversaw the development and implementation of risk-based analyses to enhance transportation security. He also helped lead the development of TSA PreCheck.
In the private sector, Sanders was co-founder of Reveal Imaging Technologies, a screening technology provider that was later acquired by SAIC, and has served on the boards of several companies that provide contraband detection, geospatial intelligence and data analytics solutions.
