The German ocean carrier’s employees demonstrated Friday in Hamburg, seeking job protection in the wake of the announcement that the company will be acquired by Maersk Line.
Approximately 500 employees of German ocean carrier Hamburg Süd demonstrated Friday at Rathausmarkt, the center square of Hamburg, seeking job protection in the wake of the announcement that the company will be acquired by Maersk Line.
While Maersk CEO Søren Skou promised a “light touch integration model” when the deal was announced, Sabine Fischbach, the chairman of Hamburg Süd’s “Works Council,” told the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper they are concerned about their job because Skou did not provide a workplace guarantee.
Hamburg Süd had 5,960 employees at the end of 2015, according to the company’s website, and the Hamburger Abendblatt said over 1,000 of the company’s employees are in Hamburg.
