For the month, steel volumes reached 844,000 tons.
However, container volume through the Gulf Coast port for July was relatively flat compared to last year, but saw a 4-percent increase in the number of loaded boxes, year-to-date. This was offset by a reduced number of empty containers being imported through the port authority’s terminals due to an increase in loaded imports.
Overall, more than 22 million tons of cargo moved across Houston’s docks during the first seven months of 2014, according to Port Authority Executive Director Roger Guenther.
The port also reached a monthly operating revenue in July of more than $24 million. For the year so far, the port generated more than $65 million in operating cash flow, a growth of 5 percent.
“This revenue generated will be reinvested in the infrastructure assets needed to increase capacity and provide for increased economic activity and job growth for the region,” Guenther said.
