Monaco Maersk sets loaded containership record

The ship left Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas on June 1 with 19,284 TEUs onboard, surpassing the total of 19,190 TEUs loaded on the MOL Tribute in February.

The Monaco Maersk set a loaded containership record with 19,284 TEUs onboard when it departed Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas on June 1, the port announced Monday in a tweet.
The second-generation Triple E vessel, which has a nominal capacity of 20,568 TEUs, surpassed the previous record of 19,190 TEUs loaded on the MOL Tribute in February. The Monaco Maersk is part of the 2M Alliance’s AE5/Albatross service and was en route from the Port of Tanjung Pelepas to the Port of Rotterdam via the Suez Canal as of Wednesday.
James Wroe, Maersk Asia Pacific head of liner operations, said the record load is the result of outstanding dedication and focus from everyone to set up the right operational conditions, according to a statement released by the MMC Group. The port is a joint venture between the utilities and infrastructure group MMC Corporations Berhad (70%) and ports group APM Terminals (30%).
The port recorded a throughput of 9 million TEUs in 2018 and is projected to handle 9.5 million TEUs this year, the statement reads.
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas helped Maersk hold the stowage record prior to the MOL Tribute when the Mumbai Maersk left the port last August with 19,038 TEUs on board.
