Senate vote ends Canadian postal worker strike

The federal government passed legislation this evening to end the strikes by Canada Post workers that have disrupted deliveries around the country during peak holiday season.

As various news outlets reported, the Senate voted 53-25 to pass the back-to-work bill, which was rushed through the House of Commons last week.

Following the Senate vote, the bill received sovereign approval, the final step by which a bill becomes law. Postal workers should be back at their jobs by Tuesday afternoon.

The bill appoints a mediator-arbitrator to help Canada Post and the union representing its workers come to an agreement. If mediation fails, the two sides would enter binding arbitration.

According to the Global News, senators voted against an amendment, proposed by independent Sen. Murray Sinclair, to delay implementation of the legislation for at least seven days after it receives royal assent.
