Caribbean nations developing anti-trafficking strategies

Haiti, Colombia and the Dominican Republic will hold meetings in March to discuss plans to combat transborder drug trafficking in the Caribbean region, with U.S. agencies expected to participate by providing logistical support, according to several news reports.

Dominican newspapers Listin Diaro and Dominican Today reported that the counties are working on programs involving naval and U.S. Coast Guard vessels and aircraft, as well as sophisticated reconnaissance equipment to fight trafficking. The emphasis will be on Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Colombia because each country has been used as transshipment points for traffickers.

The March meetings will include the presidents of the three Caribbean Rim nations, as well as officials from U.S. law enforcement agencies.
