CBP official urges security investment abroad

Businesses wanting to be certified under U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism program should dedicate resources to ensuring overseas business partners are operating securely, said Bernice Conley, a supply chain specialist with CBP, at a conference in Southern California Monday.

“When companies invest a lot of money securing domestic sites, I’d say shift your investment overseas to make sure your suppliers and vendors and brokers' are following C-TPAT requirements, she said at the western regional conference of the American Association of Exporters and Importers in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Conley said that, as of Jan. 17, 10,374 C-TPAT applications have been submitted to CBP, with 5,727 certified and 1,400 validated.
