Coast Guard probes fuel sheen in Hood Canal on Olympic Peninsula
The U.S. Coast Guard is using helicopters to investigate a fuel sheen that has appeared in the Hood Canal near Port Gamble, Wash.
Oil believed to be from a sunken 140-foot tug 'has come ashore along the Port Gamble town waterfront,' the Coast Guard said in a statement.
'The sheen of oil that spread into Hood Canal is unrecoverable and is expected to evaporate.'
The Coast Guard has opened the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to enable cleanup efforts to begin. Contractors are placing oil booms at pre-identified sensitive areas along the northern Hood Canal.
