D.C. bill targets winter driving issue

The Washington D.C. City Council is considering legislation that would penalize drivers for not clearing snow and ice off their cars before taking to the road.

The measure is designed to reduce the danger of chunks of ice flying off cars and hitting trailing vehicles.

Councilman Harry Thomas Jr. proposed the rule. A first offense would incur a $50 fine, a second offense could cost up to $100 and a third offense up to $200, according to local News Channel 8.

If passed, the law would be the first of its kind in the nation.

Some question how easily it will be for police to enforce the law.

Trucking companies are opposing the measure, saying it’s too dangerous to require their drivers to climb on top of their trucks to clean them off, the report said.
