DOT RAISES FINES FOR DEFECTIVE VEHICLE IMPORTS

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has increased fines for imported vehicles not originally manufactured to conform to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

For each violation, penalties have been increased from $1,100 to $5,000 per day, while the maximum penalty for a related series of daily violations rises from $925,000 to $15 million.

The increases were imposed to conform to the enactment of the Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability, and Documentation (TREAD) Act, which was signed by the President on November 1, 2000.
