Expanding Teesport gets new RTGs

Expanding Teesport gets new RTGs    A container terminal in northern England has received four new rubber-tired gantry cranes as part of a '16.7 million ($27.5 million) expansion, operator PD Ports said Friday.
Annual capacity at the terminal in Teesport is being expanded from 235,000 TEUs to 450,000 TEUs, with an ultimate goal of expanding to 650,000 TEUs per year.
'By switching from the current handling system using reach-stackers to these RTGs we can store many more boxes on the same area, due to their ability to create higher, wider container stacks,' said Mark Pearson, PD Ports project director. 'They also improve the number of containers handled per hour.'
The 16-wheel RTGs have a lifting capacity of 50 tons and can stack one-over-five containers high and six truck lanes wide. They're expected to be fully operational by the end of September, the operator said.
Teesport's container terminals saw volumes increase 45 percent in 2010 to 150,000 TEUs.
