Greenhouse gas emissions from ships under IMO microscope

Greenhouse gas emissions from ships under IMO microscope

Air pollution from ships, such as the emission of greenhouse gases, and a range of other environmental issues will be discussed at a meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization Oct. 11-15.

“The Marine Environment Protection Committee is expected to consider the report of the correspondence group on greenhouse gas emissions from ships,” the IMO said. The work included the consideration of a greenhouse gas emission “baseline” for international shipping and the assessment of methodologies to describe the greenhouse efficiency of a ship

The IMO committee will also discuss the issue of the recycling of old ships, including guidelines on ship recycling and criteria for ships to be declared “ready for recycling”. The IMO expects that a working group on ship recycling will be established

The Marine Environment Protection Committee of the IMO is set to consider for adoption, during next week’s meetings, revised regulations relating to the prevention of pollution by oil and by noxious liquid substances carried in bulk and to adopt a revised code for carriage of chemicals in bulk.
