Haitian mango shipments hit another snag

Haitian mango shipments hit another snag

U.S.-bound shipments of Haitian mangoes are being blocked again as a result of more discoveries of fruit flies in fruit arriving in Florida.

Melissa O'Dell, spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS), said inspectors have intercepted live fruit fly larva on shipments of precleared mango shipments at Port Everglades and in an air cargo shipment at Miami International Airport, leading to the suspension of the Haitian Mango Preclearance Program.

APHIS will conduct a comprehensive review of the program until it is reopened this December, in time for the next Haitian mango export season, O'Dell said.

APHIS will make a series of recommendation for trapping, inspection, safeguarding and traceback practices before Haitian mangoes are allowed into the United States again.
