If approved by International Maritime Organization Assembly, Kitack Lim will begin next four-year stint on Jan. 1.
The IMO Council has agreed to renew the appointment of Kitack Lim as secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization for a second four-year term.
The second term, subject to the approval of the IMO Assembly in December, is scheduled to begin Jan. 1.
Before his appointment to the IMO, Lim was president of the Busan Port Authority, a position he assumed in July 2012. In March 2011, he was named a commissioner of the Korean Maritime Safety Tribunal.
He began attending IMO meetings as part of the Republic of Korea’s delegation in 1986. He was elected chair of IMO’s Subcommittee on Flag State Implementation in 2001 and of the Tokyo Memorandum on Port State Control in 2004.
In 2006, Lim was appointed director general of the Maritime Safety Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. Later as a senior maritime attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in London, he led all IMO work for the Republic of Korea, serving as an alternate permanent representative until August 2009. Following that, he was reappointed director general for the Maritime Safety Bureau.
