Invasive beetle found on Staten Island

An invasive pest, the Asian long-horned beetle, has been found for the first time on Staten Island.

The beetle, which can kill hardwood trees, originates in Asia and is one of the pests that has lead to the creation of strict rules governing the treatment of wood packaging material used in international trade.

An infested silver maple tree was discovered in the Bloomfield section of the island according to New York City Department of Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe said.

The beetle has previously been discovered in areas around Port Newark and Elizabeth, N.J.
