MSC low water surcharges coming, going

Mediterranean Shipping Co. said this week it will terminate a 'low water' surcharge for shipments through the Port of Montreal due to improved river water level.

The Swiss liner carrier did, however, say that, 'should the river water level drop back again, MSC will reinstate the surcharge with an appropriate amount.'

Meanwhile, MSC said it has begun assessing a low water surcharge on barge and barge-road shipments to and from the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp using the Rhine River. The surcharge is 15 euros per 20-foot container and 25 euros per 40-foot container.

'The amount can vary according to the severity and duration of the low-water situation,' the line said. 'Amendments will be announced on short notice.'
