Norfolk breakbulk terminal able to receive bigger vessels

Lambert’s Point Docks, a breakbulk terminal owned by railroad holding company Norfolk Southern Corp. at the Port of Norfolk, Va., said it has completed dredging to handle ships with drafts up to 36 feet.

The terminal is a large gateway for forest products, and company officials said the extra depth will allow the terminal to handle ships carrying more diverse types of cargo per visit.

“The increased price of chartering has led to consolidation of commodities aboard vessels, thereby increasing the loads and the requirement for deeper drafts,” said Corine Barbour, general superintendent, in a statement.

The dredging was limited to the north side of the terminal’s Pier P, with other berths remaining at the 32-foot depth. The shallow conditions forced some vessels to bypass the terminal for other ports.
