NYK, MTI develop automatic camera for vessel engine monitoring

NYK and Monohakobi Technology Institute, an NYK Group company, jointly developed “Kirari NINJA,” the first camera device in the industry designed to monitor a vessel’s engine.

NYK and Monohakobi Technology Institute, an NYK Group Company, jointly developed “Kirari NINJA” (No Hands INside Just A camera), which is the first camera device in the industry designed to monitor a vessel’s engine, NYK said in a statement.
The Kirari NINJA, which automatically photographs the inside of an engine’s combustion chamber, features a 360-degree panoramic camera and LED lighting.
The device can be installed on the upper part of the piston in the combustion chamber and is able to take photographs in all directions of the interior in approximately 10 minutes.
Having the Kirari NINJA can significantly reduce crew work burden because when crew members inspect a combustion chamber, they must enter the inside of the high temperature engine once it is off and it is very hard for them to see details with how dark it is inside, NYK said.
The patent is currently pending on the new device, which is jointly manufactured by electronics engineering and trading company Daito Electron Co. Ltd.
