Port of Tampa completes cement terminal

The Port of Tampa said Thursday that it has completed the construction of a new berth for the new cement terminal used by Gaetano Cacciatore, Inc. (GCI), a subsidiary of Denmark's Aalborg Portland A/S.

The new terminal is located at in the Port Sutton area at Pendola Point Road and has the capacity to handle two million tons of cement and aggregate materials a year.

With the state's strong construction and road building industries, the demand for cement and aggregate is up. Port officials say cement and aggregate shipments were up 6 percent to 4.4 million tons in fiscal year 2006. Tampa is one of the leading cement ports in the nation.

'As the Port of Tampa diversifies, we very much want to continue to grow our anchor bulk business,' Richard Wainio, port director and CEO, said.    'The development of Berth 26 and the presence of new customers like Gaetano Cacciatore are strong indicators that the Port of Tampa will remain the major gateway for the movement of key commodities, essential for the continued impressive expansion of central Florida.'

Added GCI president Alex Narcise: 'We are excited about the new terminal here at Port Sutton and look forward to much success as our business in Tampa grows, as will relationships with our port partners.'
